What We Care About Getting Right
Finding the water before selling the cure. Nearly every crawl space problem in this region traces back to moisture, and moisture has four possible sources — surface runoff, groundwater, plumbing and condensation. They need four different fixes. Encapsulating a crawl space that floods, or draining one whose problem is humid summer air, is money spent on the wrong thing.
Measuring rather than guessing. Wood decay begins above roughly twenty percent moisture content. That is a number, it takes seconds to read, and it turns an argument about whether there is a problem into a fact. Any assessment that does not include it is an opinion.
Telling people when the answer is cheap. A meaningful share of the crawl spaces we look at need downspout extensions and a liner, not a five-figure job. Saying so costs us work and it is the reason anyone should trust the times we say otherwise.
What We Will Not Do
We will not quote structural work over the phone as though it were a fixed product.
We will not tell you a crawl space can be made permanently free of mold. Spores exist in all air; what can be controlled is moisture, and controlling it is what actually stops growth.
We will not sell piers for a floor that is bouncing because its interior supports have settled. Those are different problems with very different prices, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in this trade.
And we will not lead with a frightening lab report before anyone has established where the water is coming from.
Why Huntsville
Two reasons this work is more common here than most places.
The climate. Summer dew points in the low seventies for months, meeting framing that sits nearer sixty-five degrees. Vented crawl spaces were required by code for decades and in this climate they function as a moisture delivery system rather than a cure.
The geology. Limestone under a clay layer, dissolved through with joints and channels, which means groundwater does not always behave the way it would further south, and a crawl space can be dry one week and wet the next with no rain in between.
Neither is bad luck. Both are predictable, which is also why they are worth understanding rather than panicking about.
