Do I have a sinkhole problem in Huntsville?

Almost certainly not — but the question is more reasonable here than in most of the country, and it deserves a straight answer rather than either reassurance or alarm.

Why It Is a Fair Question

Madison County sits on Mississippian limestone. Limestone dissolves in slightly acidic groundwater, and over long periods that opens joints, channels and voids in the rock. It is why north Alabama has caves and springs, and it is why sinkholes occur here in a way they do not in, say, heavy clay regions further south.

So the underlying geology is real. Anybody who tells you sinkholes are not a thing in Huntsville is wrong.

Why It Is Still Probably Not Your House

Genuine sinkhole damage to a residential structure is uncommon. The overwhelming majority of foundation and crawl space problems in this area have ordinary causes: clay shrinking and swelling seasonally, fill consolidating under a newer house, water badly managed at the surface, or crawl space supports that have settled into softened soil.

Those produce cracking and movement that looks alarming and is entirely routine to fix.

What Would Actually Suggest a Void

Settlement that is sharply localized rather than spread along an elevation — one corner or one small area dropping while everything else stays put.

Movement that is sudden rather than seasonal. Clay movement comes and goes with the weather; a void does not politely reverse in winter.

Circular depressions in the yard, or ground that sounds hollow.

A crack that keeps widening steadily through both wet and dry seasons.

How It Gets Established

Not by a contractor’s opinion. If the pattern genuinely suggests a void, the next step is a geotechnical engineer, who can carry out borings or ground-penetrating survey work. That is a different profession from foundation repair and the distinction matters — a repair company confirming its own diagnosis has an obvious interest in the answer.

What We Will Tell You

If we look at your house and the evidence points to ordinary settlement, we will say so and quote for ordinary settlement.

If it points at something we are not qualified to assess, we will say that too and tell you to get an engineer, even though it means we do not get the job. Selling piers into a void problem would be both useless and dishonest.
